In recent years health and childcare professionals have been encouraged to devote a growing part of their time to disease prevention, health promotion and early intervention. This has come about, in part, because of the recognition that good eating habits adopted in early life have life-long health benefits.
This has been reflected in a number of government initiatives that have stressed the important role of health and childcare professionals (HCPs) in encouraging and supporting parents to help their children adopt healthy eating habits and life-styles.
Unfortunately, although the toddler years are a crucial time when dietary habits and preferences are established, there is a lack of clear guidance and consistent advice on healthy eating and optimal nutrition. This has resulted in some confusion for parents and carers.
The Infant and Toddler Forum was formed in the recognition that HCPs play a critical role in providing advice to parents and in implementing public health policy. They therefore need to have access to the latest and best evidence-based thinking. They also need resources to translate this information into clear health messages for parents, and to interact with other health professionals and thereby learn from each other and share best practice.
The Forum aims to meet these professional needs.
